1. Fin SETUPS AND HOW THEY WORK
Thruster, Twin, Quad and more
Choosing the right fin setup can transform your surfing experience by optimizing control, speed, and maneuverability to suit your style and the waves you're riding.
Whether you're looking for stability on a single fin, the agility of a thruster, or the speed and hold of a quad, each fin setup has unique characteristics that cater to different conditions and techniques.
Learn more about the different set-ups in detail below.
THRUSTER SET-UP
A thruster fin setup is the most popular fin configuration for surfboards, known for its versatility and control in a wide range of wave conditions. This setup consists of three fins: two inclined side fins and one central rear fin, arranged in a triangular pattern.
Control in Turns: This fin configuration offers balanced resistance, which makes it easier to carve, especially on shortboards.
Stability: The center fin adds stability, which is particularly helpful in larger, more powerful waves.
Predictable Release: The thruster setup allows for controlled release of the board’s tail, making it easier to perform critical moves like cutbacks, snaps, and other tight maneuvers.

TWIN FIN SET-UP
A twin fin setup features just two fins, one on each side of the board. Positioned near the rails and toward the tail, this fin configuration is most commonly found on retro fish shapes like the Twice Fish. It offers playfullness over precision.
Speed and Glide: Twin fins are known for providing excellent speed, especially down the line, because of the reduced drag from having fewer fins in the water.
Loose, Skatey Feel: With no center fin to add resistance, twin fins give the board a looser, more playful feel, allowing the tail to slide out more easily during turns. This setup is ideal for creating a flowing, retro style with smooth transitions and wide carves.
Maneuverability in Small Waves: The twin fin setup is great for smaller, mushier waves where generating speed is a priority. It enables fast, agile surfing in less powerful surf.
QUAD SET-UP
A quad fin setup consists of four fins: two on each side of the board, positioned in pairs near the rails. The quad setup offers a blend of speed and control, combining elements of both twin and thruster setups. This Set Up is popular in Modern Fish Shapes like the Fish'n Chixx and Performance Shortboards like the Playground to enhance speed and minimize drag.
Speed and Drive: Without a center fin to create drag, the quad setup offers impressive down-the-line speed, especially in fast, barreling waves. This makes it excellent for generating speed quickly when driving down the line.
Hold in Steep Sections: Quads provide better grip in steeper, more powerful waves, thanks to the positioning of the rear fins. The extra hold is especially helpful when making sharp bottom turns or carving in the pocket.
Looseness with Control: The quad setup combines some of the looseness of a twin fin with more control, making it a good choice for surfers who want a fast, maneuverable board without the center fin’s resistance.
SINGLE FIN SET-UP
The single fin setup is the original surfboard fin configuration and is most often seen on longboards and classic retro boards. It’s characterized by one large fin positioned near the tail of the board along the centerline. The single fin setup offers a unique, classic surfing experience that emphasizes smooth, flowing lines and stability over aggressive maneuverability.
Smooth, Flowing Turns: The single fin is all about graceful, drawn-out turns. It doesn’t allow for rapid direction changes but instead encourages a more elegant, fluid style of surfing.
Stability and Control: With a single fin, the board gains stability, which is why this setup is common on longboards designed for nose riding and trim. It provides steady hold and keeps the board tracking well in a straight line.
Less Drag: Since there’s only one fin, the single fin setup reduces drag, allowing for a feeling of glide and trim, especially in small to medium-sized waves.

RIVER/ TRAILER THRUSTER SET-UP
A river thruster setup for rapid surfing is designed specifically for riding standing waves in rivers or artificial wave pools, which require a unique fin configuration to optimize control, responsiveness, and agility. It is also popular in Fish and Modern Fish Shapes like the Fish Taco and therefore also commonly used in Ocean Surfboards with a trailer thruster set up.
Side Fins: The two side fins are positioned closer to the rails, but often slightly further forward than in an ocean setup to allow for enhanced maneuverability and responsiveness.
Center Fin: The center fin is typically smaller than in a standard thruster, or sometimes even removed entirely, as river surfing doesn’t require the same degree of hold and stability. When included, it’s usually set more forward to promote looser, skate-like handling.
2. Fin Features That Transform Your Ride
How Fin Foil, Size, and Flex Shape Your Surfing Experience
These seemingly simple components determine how your board interacts with the wave, affecting speed, stability, maneuverability, and overall feel.
Understanding the nuances of fin design—specifically the foil, size, and flex—can elevate your surfing, helping you ride waves with greater precision and style.
Foil
The term foil refers to the contour and shape of the fin's surface, particularly how it curves from one edge to the other.
This shaping influences how water flows over the fin and significantly impacts a board's speed, control, and maneuverability. Inside foils and flat foils create a different surfing experience, with inside foils providing more lift and speed, and flat foils offering a balance of speed and control.
Size
Size affects stability, hold, and maneuverability.
Size is defined by fin depth and base length and can be seen in our fins' product descriptions.
Choosing the correct fin size based on your weight, wave conditions, and board style can make a significant difference in your board's performance. We generally recommend Size M for a max. body weight of 75 kg.
Choose L if you’re above this value or if you want more drive and stability.
Flex
Flex refers to how much a fin bends when a surfer is turning.
The more flex, the looser it will be. Making for a fun, forgiving way of surfing. An inflexible fin will make for a faster ride but will also be more stable & predictable.
SUPER SOFT
Flex as a feature. These fins allow beginners and upcomers to have a forgiving ride with added safety. These fins are a great choice for Riverwaves too, as they can avoid the breakage of finboxes thanks to their flexy character.
SOFT
The perfect choice for upcomers and intermediates. This set provides a good amount of hold while beeing easy and forgiving.
MEDIUM
The perfect compromise between drive and flex. Full speed generation potential while keeping a touch of forgivingness in your turns.
RESPONSIVE
The ideal choice for advanced surfers. Thanks to reinforcements, the fins respond super directly to your turns and give you reliable hold in every wave.

3. The different types of fin systems
FCS, Futures & Co.
Fin box systems are an essential part of your surfboard, allowing you to customize and secure your fins to match different preferences. Over the years, fin box systems have evolved significantly.
Leading designs like FCS (Fin Control System) and Futures have set industry standards, continually innovating to enhance strength, hydrodynamics, and ease of use. Early models were focused on simplicity, but advancements in materials and engineering have led to lighter, stronger, and more performance-oriented systems.
Learn more about the most common types of fin boxes below:
FCS I / II FINS
FCS fins use a dual-tab system for attaching fins to the board. Each fin has two small pegs, or tabs, that fit into corresponding slots in the fin box and are secured with screws. The FCS II system, an updated version of the original FCS, is screwless. FCS II fins can be pushed directly into the fin box, where they click into place. This makes installation and removal very quick and requires no tools, but it’s only compatible with FCS II fin boxes. The angle of the fin is determined in the finbox.
FUTURES FINS
The system differs slightly from FCS. Futures uses a single, full-length tab that runs along the base of each fin, which fits into a long slot in the board. Once inserted, the tab is secured with a screw. Since it is a single tab finbox, the angle of the fin is determined by the fin shape.
US FINS
A US fin box, also known as a longboard fin box, is a type of fin box primarily used on longboards and mid-length boards This fin box system is designed to hold a single fin or center fin that can be adjusted forward or backward within the box, allowing surfers to fine-tune the board’s feel and performance.
THE RIGHT FINS CAN TURN A DECENT SESSION INTO AN UNFORGETTABLE RIDE
To find the ideal setup, start by considering your board’s shape, your personal style, and the surf conditions you’ll face. Once you have a handle on these basics, experiment with different fin shapes, materials, and configurations to discover the setup that suits you best.
Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting, knowing how these fin attributes work equips you to customize your setup for your ideal surfing experience.
